Head Start Programs and Recompetition-A Sobering Reality

Now that Part 1307 is law (see link), many Head Start programs I am working with are desperately searching for new and innovative ways to increase quality in the classroom. As Early Childhood Professionals, we all know that increasing the level of teacher training and knowledge is the way to make this happen. Unfortunately, funding issues always seem to come into play. True?

For most teachers, we also know that a one-time workshop is NOT the answer. Training needs to be continuous, with constant reinforcement and time for practice. Again, given time and budget constraints, this type of meaningful learning is often not practical.
From everyone I have spoken with recently, it sounds like the challenge for administrators in Head Start is to increase the quality in your classrooms while at the same time stretching your dollars further. Correct? This is NOT an easy task…I realize that. But here’s where I feel I can make help.
Did you realize that ABC includes teacher training tools built right into the program that they use with EVERY lesson? For instance, there is an Activity Demonstration DVD that SHOWS teachers how to implement the activities. There are also teacher-led CDs that guide teachers HOW to lead lessons that are engaging, interactive, and meaningful. As teachers use these components, they will learn what quality instruction should look AND sound like. And over the weeks and months they continue to use the materials, their own personal teaching skills will grow as well. I like to think of it as having a teacher mentor in each classroom.

It is crucial that we understand the necessity for QI-or Quality Instruction.  Teachers must have the tools to extend their teachings to all areas of the classroom. Federal mandates are proving this with CLASS assessment scores.
I would love to help
